Could German education be an affordable alternate?

Tuition cost at American college’s are rapidly rising. A financial burden to all American Parents and Students. The good news is that Germany is attracting American students to take advantage of tuition free education degree in their country.

Many Indian parents who came to the US on as students a decade ago after leaving their family and friends back home, today find difficult to imagine sending their children to an unknown country for education.

Debt free quality education is difficult to ignore. More than 5000 US students are fully enrolled at Germany universities, an increase of 20% over three years. At the same time, the total student debt in the US has reached $1.3 trillion (£850 billion). Average cost for a German student for each semester fee for a degree in physics is €111 ($120) e.g. Technical University of Munich (TUM), one of the highly regarded universities in Europe. The fees include a public transportation ticket to travel freely around Munich. Also health insurance is very big saving for the US Student in Germany €80 ($87)/month. On an average covering rent, mandatory health insurance and other expenses student can live comfortably in Germany with total expense in range of $6,000-7,000 each year.

Unless you can receive some form of scholarship or in a scenario students are working part time to cover that extra cost; comparing similar school expense in the US, with scholarships and other discounts you are paying out of pocket around $10,000 a year excluding housing, books and living expenses.

Language is not a barrier in this country, students enrolling in all elite universities are from 50 different countries and entire course is taught in English. In fact, German universities have increased all-English classes to more than 1,150 programs across many subject fields. European Union members signed the Bologna Accords in 1999, which called for uniform University degrees, and established a Bachelor/Master system across Europe.

An average 20% of non- German students enroll in Technical University in Munich. It is anticipated that by year 2020 majority of programs will be offered in English language, whereas study subject like philosophy and other cultural sciences will be available only in German. Students usually learn basic German language before or later when they join program after arrival with very nominal cost.

Official in Germany stating that on average costs on a non-German student averages to about €13,300 ($14,600) a year. That's €332.5 ($364.3) million that Berlin spends a year on foreign students. Research shows that the system is working, 50% of foreign students stay in Germany after graduation. Saying that if only 40% stay for five years and pay taxes we recover the cost for the tuition.

For a society with a demographic problem - a growing retired population and fewer young people entering college and the workforce - qualified immigration is seen as a resolution to the problem for Germany.
